The MORPH FOLDING WHEEL

The wheelchair re-invented. This wheelchair wheel, designed by Vitamins co-founder Duncan Fitzsimons, can fold away for travel and storage and is set to revolutionise the world of foldable wheelchairs. For the first time, wheelchair wheels can fit easily into an airplane overhead locker, or trunk of a small car. The folded wheels take on a much smaller and more convenient shape, snugly fitting into corners at home or when travelling. When packing a manual wheelchair it’s as if the wheels have disappeared; all you need to worry about is the main chair and the wheels can be tucked alongside any way you like. In this respect they complete the folding wheelchair as a product, finally allowing wheelchairs to fold as neatly and conveniently as a folding bike. Duncan’s design is patented and is currently being produced by US medical supplies manufacturer, Maddak, as the Morph Folding Wheel

When folded, this wheel was designed to take up only 12 litres of space, compared with 22 litres when it is circular and in use. That’s nearly half the volume saved. Originally, this foldable wheel was designed to allow folding bicycles to have bigger wheels, bridging the gap in performance between these and regular bikes. However, after being selected as one of 10 finalists in the Saatchi & Saatchi World Changing Ideas Award, Duncan’s design caught the attention of the worlds press and resulted in a phenomenal response from wheelchair users. Duncan has developed the folding wheel with generous support from the Royal College of Art, the Wingate Foundation and the James Dyson Foundation. It was also selected as one of 10 Designs for 2010 by Wolff Olins and Wallpaper* Magazine, won the Transport Category of Design of the Year 2013 at the Design Museum, and won Duncan Product Design of the Year at the Icon Magazine awards.
